How to Get Cheap Virginia Beach Lodging Deals

Want a hot deal on Virginia Beach lodging?

Copyright Eileen Mundok 2008.
There are tons of places to stay in and around the Virginia Beach area, and there are many price options too.

But if you want to go as inexpensive as possible, you have to do a little searching. Luckily, we've done the searching for you!

We'll show you places to get Virginia Beach lodging coupons, give you advice on how to use the coupons, and give you link to a third option: a hostel.

Do you stop at rest stops? You may want to now! Be sure to pick up these publications (also available in restaurants, hotels and attractions in the greater Williamsburg/Virginia Beach area):

  • Room$aver Traveler Discount Guide
  • VA-DC-MD-West VA-DE Travel Coupons (travelcoupons.com)
  • Official Interstate Guide FREE Hotel Travel $aving$ (www.theoig.com)

Published quarterly, they're free and they feature coupons for Virginia Beach lodging. And the prices are good! They claim to have better discounts than online sites too.

Note that prices really jump for July and August. Avoid the peak summer months and you'll get the best deals.

Here's a sample of hotels that are in or near Virginia Beach:

On the Oceanfront--

Sandcastle Oceanfront Resort orSurfside Oceanfront Inn & Suites

Winter rate: $45 (Jan-Feb; $49 in March). Summer rates: $59 (May), $79 (June), $139 (July-Aug. 23), $99 (Aug. 24-28), $69 (Sept.)/ 1-2 people including children/ surcharge on Fri/Sat -- they offer free continental breakfast, on-site parking, an indoor heated pool, rooms with fridges and microwaves, fitness room, 24-hour coffee and juice, free newpaper, cable TV w/HBO and more

A sandcastle at the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival.
Ocean Suites

Winter rate: $39 Dec-Jan, $45 Feb-March. Summer rates: $84 June 1-12, $119 June 13-30, $149 July - Aug. 16, $109 Aug. 17-28, $69 Sept./ 1-2 people including children/ surcharge on Fri/Sat -- This newly renovated hotel offers two-room oceanfront suites, full-service kitchens with cookware and utensils, private balconies, guest laundry, cable TV w/HBO and more.

One Block From Oceanfront--

Belmont Inn & Suites - $59 June, $90 July-August (1-2 people, local residents excluded)-- outdoor pool, microwave, fridge and safe in all rooms, Cable TV w/ HBO, coffee and newspapers, etc.

And for the lowest of the low...

Sundial Motel & Efficiencies - Winter rate: $29 (January); Summer rates: $59-$184 (Fri/Sat surcharge) -- outdoor pool (although it's really tiny!), microwave, fridge and safe in all rooms, Cable TV w/ HBO, coffee and newspapers, etc.

To be honest, I've heard both positive and very negative reviews of both these places. Some rave about the value and cleanliness. Others vehemently complain that the staff tend to rank rather low on the "cordiality factor" (to put it nicely) or that the rooms are dirty. So it's definitely buyer beware. That being said, if you're just looking for a place to lay your head, you can't beat the price!

What's the Catch?

Are these rates for Virginia Beach lodging too good to be true? Well, they're definitely budget hotels (don't expect anything posh), but if you're looking for something inexpensive, these rates can't be beat.

There are two catches. First, to get these rates you need the coupons (although you can print them off online).

Second, they're only good for walk-ins (no booking ahead) so you run the risk of finding a "no vacancy" sign, especially during the summer.

Plus, some coupons aren't good on holidays and weekends, or may have weekend surcharges (like an extra $5-$10 per day).

But if you're trying to save money and don't have to plan ahead, they can help you save big on Virginia Beach lodging.

One thing to note: It's always a good idea to double check on amenities and hotel taxes BEFORE you arrive. Hotel taxes at the beach run about %13, so keep that in mind and ask for the "out the door" price (taxes and all) unless you want to be surprised.

Also, if you're counting on certain amenities (like an on-site laundry or hair dryer) don't rely on what it says in the ads on on the hotel's website. Call and ask. Lower budget hotels are notorious for not updating their websites!

Guess what? These coupon guides also offer coupons for Williamsburg hotels. To check out some of their Williamsburg hotel deals, click here.

What if you need to book ahead?

Some people just can't stand the idea of winging it (guilty!) and "need" to book ahead in order to feel comfortable. But that doesn't mean you're stuck with paying high rates.

Powered by HotelsCombined.com
Just a few minutes of time can still save you money on Virginia Beach lodging. This resource from HotelsCombined lets you search hotel rates from multiple online booking sites simultaneously (unless you'd prefer hours and hours spent searching multiple sites yourself!).

Enter your check-in and check-out dates and the name of the city where you want to stay. (The search may take a minute or more, since they're searching multiple sites, so be patient.)

You'll get back a list of Virginia Beach lodging spots with room prices, hotel ratings, and --best of all, reviews from people who've stayed there. Sort them by price, reviews, location and more. Find the deal that's right for you!

Anonther Option: A Virginia Beach Hostel

If you're willing to go really basic, a Virginia Beach hostel is your cheapest bet (next to camping). Here's a top-rated hostel we've found along the oceanfront:

Angie's Guest Cottage

Located one block from the beach, this cottage was originally built to house the families of men stationed withi the US Coast Guard. It's been a guest cottage since 1978 the Yates family with lodging in the main house and hostel dorm rooms in the back.

Dorm Bed price: $4-22 plus tax; Private Room price: $39 plus tax.

Angie's Guest Cottage address: 302 24th Street, VA Beach
Angie's Guest Cottage phone number: 757-491-1830
Angie's Guest Cottage Web site: http://www.angiescottage.com/

We also found a great, clean-looking hostel near Williamsburg that offers beds in motel-quality rooms for only $19.50 per night and up. For details on this Williamsburg hostel, go to our Colonial Williamsburg Hotels page.
