How Did I Build a Web Site That Makes Thousands a Month?

How did a semi-computer literate mom like me build a web site that makes me a five-figure income each year? That has enabled me to DOUBLE my income each year for the past four years Even when I sleep? Even when I don't work on it for months at a time?

I'll be honest. Here's NOT how it happened...

"Hi Vicky!" What did you do this weekend?"

"We took the kids to see 'Cars.' What did you do this weekend, Elizabeth?"

"Oh, I built an entire web site."

Sorry. Didn't happen quite like that. It took time, but it did happen. I built a highly successful, professional-looking web site, even though my computer skills didn't amount to much more than email web surfing.

Let me tell you how it happened...

I was a stay at home, homeschooling mom, looking for some extra income. Didn't want to work outside the home. Wanted to be with my little kids as much as possible. What could I do?

I investigated all the usual...Mary Kay, Melaleuca, Amway, direct mail, etc. Some opportunities seemed legit, some didn't. And I had real concerns whether any of them would actually make me any significant money on a regular basis.

No slam on any of these things...they just didn't seem to be what I was looking for. What was I really looking for?

--Something that would make me serious money without costing me an arm and a leg in start-up fees.

--Something that I could do from home so I wouldn't sacrifice my family.

--Something that would challenge me intellectually (no stuffing envelopes, thank you!).

--Something that I would truly love and have fun doing (c'mon, isn't life too short to hate your work?).

The Random Fluke That Got Me on the Road to Online Success

That's how it happened to me. I was leafing through my 20th anniversary college reunion book when one of the pages caught my eye. To my surprise, a classmate from my freshman year dorm was living in Japan and homeschooling her four kids.

As a fellow homeschooler, I was intrigued enough to keep reading. Then I stopped. How did Hillary build a web site? I racked my brain. "I thought she was History major?" I thought. "How did she figure out how to make a website?"

So I surfed her site, www.homeschool-curriculum-advisor.com (check it out, it's still there). Professional. Clearly-laid out. Hmm. I was impressed, especially when I read that she was actually making money through it. But how did Hillary get the know-how to build a web site like this (while homeschooling four kids)?

That's when I looked at the bottom of her site and I read the two words (or is it one?) which changed my life:

Okay, enough mush. Here's the facts. My initial goal was

After nine months of working maybe 15 hours a week on my site (all I could handle between homeschooling and family), I had broken even with my expenses.

How? Mostly through the income I generated from having Google AdSense ads on my site. You know those ads you see on web pages? Yep. I get money whenever people click on them, even when I sleep!

Keep in mind that during that first year, I had decided to take classes to get my teacher's license. So I sometimes went weeks doing absolutely nothing on my site.

After seeing that the money was starting to come in on a steady basis, I decided that my goal to build a web site was to make enough money to cover my mortgage costs. I reached that goal during my second year, working maybe 10 hours a week...again, sometimes going months doing nothing at all.

Then, things exploded--in a positive way.

Once I hit about 150 pages on my site, started blogging a few times a week, and faithfully following all the advice to build a web site I received through SiteSell, things absolutely took off. During the busy tourist season (May through August), I started getting 4,000 visitors a day on my site. Some months I made nearly $4000 a month!

And the really cool thing? While the money was pouring in, I was doing almost nothing on my site. Now, I'm a busy high school teacher and Journalism Adviser, and I simply don't have the time to build a web site once it's up and running. I've literally gone four months where the only thing I did on my site was cash my AdSense checks!

How many part-time jobs do that? Let you rake in the money while doing absolutely nothing?

2010 Update: My income doubled over the past year, to the point where I expect by this time next year, I'll easily make MORE money on my website (working maybe 10-15 hours a month) than I do teaching full-time!

I'm not going to kid you. Building a successful site takes time, and it's a lot of work in the beginning. But once it gets going, it just goes...and goes...whether you're awake, sleeping, working on another job, traveling, you name it. The money just keeps coming in.

I've been so impressed by my experience that I'm encouraging all my students to build a website so they too can have a passive stream of income for the rest of their lives, whether they do it full time or just to make some extra money.

And I'll be the first to tell you that you don't need SiteSell to build a website. There are plenty of people who've done it using other services, figuring out how to doing things on their own, etc. It's certainly possible.
