"Welcome to Moes!" for Great Food and Great Prices
"Welcome to Moes!"
It's a tradition that, whenever people walk into this fantastic, pseudo fastfood chain, the food servers yell this out in unison. A small thing, really, but it adds to the fun atmosphere.
And I'm convinced that this spot has got to be the best "fast food" value on the market. It's not fast food, really. Actually, you tell the server what you're ordering--my favorite is the "Instant Friend," a vegetarian quesadilla with sauteed vegies, cheese, and black beans-- and they personalize it to your specifications (add tomatoes, lettuce, skip the beans, etc.).
My husband's favorite is the "Home Wrecker." It's a huge burrito with your choice of meat, beans, rice, shredded cheese, pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole. All meals come with tortilla chips and sour cream, salsa, and/or chipotle sauce.
As you may have picked up by now, they specialize in quirky menu names: The Funkmeister (taco), Joey Bag of Donuts (burrito), and Moo Moo Mr. Cow (kid's quesadilla) among other things. Their website calls the names "a pop culture bonanza" of their favorite things." Presumably, they're references to movies, but I've never been able to make any sense out of them.
No matter. The best deal of all is the kids meals. For less than $4, kids can get a kids' size quesadilla, taco, or burrito, along with chips and salsa or sour cream, a drink, and a toy. No plastic McDonald's crud here. Their toys are things like card games and puzzles that will keep kids occupied in the car and long after those plastic chotchkies have bit the dust.
Three things are guaranteed whenever we go to there. First, we'll always be full. Second, we'll never spend more than $20 for our family of four. Third, I'll always say the same thing to my husband (literally): "Honey, this is such an amazing deal!"
Two warnings: If you object to places with running tv's, this is not the place. They always have one or more tv's, usually set to either CNN or a sports channel. No sound, so you won't have to deal with that, and I've never had to have my kids turn away from anything objectionable, but I thought I'd warn you.
The second warning is this: if you object to having your food made by late teens/early 20-ish guys or gals with large nose rings or other unusual piercings, this is not your place. Don't know why, but I've seen this at location after location. Guess it's part of the overall quirkiness.
They have dozens of location in Virginia. In Virginia Beach, they're located at 869 Lynnhaven Parkway, and at 5222 Fairfield Shopping Center. They have a location in Norfolk, at 520 West 21st Street, and two locations in Chesapeake, and one on Colliseum Boulevard in Hampton.

Norfolk's Baker's Crust is our favorite family reunion spot. They're famous in the area for their yummy sandwiches, specials like chicken canneloni, and their decadent dessert crepes. It's convenient to both the Virginia Zoo and Norfolk International Airport.
Rowena's Tea Room, also in Norfolk, has earned our vote for our "#1 Girls Spot." And they have a wonderful tasting room where you can sample all their delicious pound cake flavors for free.
If we're looking for a quick and inexpensive bite to eat in between visiting Nauticus, Mermaids on Parade, the Chrysler Museum, or other Norfolk sights, we like Doumar's Drive In.
In Portsmouth, you'll find our favorite date spot, The Commodore Dinner Theater, a 50's, restored, art deco theater which shows first-run movies a surprisingly good and affordable dining while you watch.
And if you're looking further afield, we recommend Pierce's BBQ and
Peking Restaurant.
